This vest was completed during February of 2004 as a gift for Dr. Leonard S. Goldberg, Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Richmond on the occasion of my daughter, Christie McDiffett's, graduation from that school. Dr. Goldberg's friendship and support for Christie and her family was a highlight of her time at the University and will always be appreciated. The vest was hand-knit using approximately 1,300 yards of handspun two-ply yarn in natural-colored light gray merino wool. Its special feature is, of course, the spider motif knitted into the side panels of both the front and the back. As UR's mascot is the spider, this seemed unavoidable in designing the vest. The patterns for the spider and the central ("wrought iron") panels came from Charted Knitting Designs, A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G Walker (Charles Scribner's Sons, NY. 1972), pp. 35 and 47, respectively. The other stitches used were of my own devising, though surely not wholly original. |
