Rainbow Mittens

These Forest House Fiberworks original mittens were made in December 2004 as a Christmas gift for my daughter, Christie McDiffett. She had requested "rainbow mittens" and remembered the patterning of a sweater I had bought in New Zealand in 1990-91, but how these two played out in designing was left to me. I charted the top center front portion of the sweater to form the black portion of the fronts and backs of the hands. The thumbs have no patterning other than alternating black and colored yarn across each row. The black yarn is handspun natural alpaca, and the colored sections, with the exception of the turquoise, are domestic wool. The turquoise yarn is from British merino wool. The mittens together weigh 3.7 ounces, and used a combined total of approximately 252 yards of wool and alpaca yarns.
