Pie Bag

The designer of this bag named it a “Sunburst Sling” bag, but I’ve named my adaptation of the pattern “Pie Bag” for obvious (I think) reasons.

The knitting is accomplished in an intriguing series of “short rows”; rows that stop short of completion and turn around and go back, thereby building up the outside edge and keeping the center small.

In my adaptation, the gusset/handle piece is knitted right onto the bag pieces rather than being sewn on.  The bag is lined with knit suede cloth and decorated with a bead closure, which includes a New Zealand paua shell, a nod to the variegated wool from Chilko Fibres near Christchurch, New Zealand.  The variegated yarn is handspun and Navajo-plied in order to preserve color separation and create a rounded three-ply yarn.  The second yarn used is a two-ply spun from natural black alpaca from Peru.

The original design is by Jill Vosburg of “Just One More Row” in Redwood City, California.
