This christening shawl was made for a friend when she was expecting a "surprise" baby sixteen years after her first child was born. Jack was born in August of 1999 and was greeted with this 100% silk shawl inspired by Elizabeth Zimmermann's "Stonington Shawl" in her Knitting Workshop (Pittsville, WI: Schoolhouse Press, 1981). The body of the shawl is done in garter stitch, and the two lace patterns are garter-stitch-based, so the shawl is reversible. Two similar shawls were made in merino wool for nieces born in the early 1990s. |
